CARBON FOOTPRINT
Global warming is real and it is upon us. In the 1960s, the warming effect of GHG’s became evident. During the 1970s, scientific opinion increasingly leaned towards the warming viewpoint and by the 1990s, as a result of improving computer models and observational work the Milankovitch theory of the ice ages were confirmed and consensus position formed: greenhouse gases were deeply involved in most climate changes, and human emissions were bringing serious global warming.

Whilst the effects of global warming are increasingly felt by the average Joe on the street through extreme weather conditions, there are nevertheless sceptics whom prefer to link it to other causes ranging from divine intervention to normal sersonal deviations.

The single biggest problem is to get people to understand that because of the neglect, expansionism and unfettered capitalism, we must now start regulating our ways of living to ensure a habitable earth for those who come after us.

The main drivers of this will be the International Community, our Government through all three tiers, corporations, smaller and medium businesses but mostly - you, the responsible citizen who can lead through example in your circle of influence.

What are Greenhouse gasses?

Many chemical compounds found in the Earth's atmosphere act as "greenhouse gasses." These gasses allow sunlight to enter the atmosphere freely. When sunlight strikes the Earth's surface, some of it is re-radiated back towards space as infrared radiation (heat).

Greenhouse gases absorb this infrared radiation and trap its heat in the atmosphere. This causes changes in weather patterns of which the most visible one is the polar caps which are rapidly melting.

The big danger is that this heating of the earth may reach a tipping point and then feeds on itself to create a situation that is irreversible. This process must be stopped as a matter of urgency.

Scientists have been warning countries to keep the global temperature increase below two-degrees by the turn of the century - otherwise we are headed towards a four-degree rise. Even a two-degree rise in global temperatures by the end of this century, which many predict will happen, would have a catastrophic effect: water stress in the drier countries, floods in low-lying coastal areas, coastal erosion in island states, and the elimination of up to 30 % of animal and plant species.

Many gases exhibit greenhouse properties. Some occur naturally. Some are also produced by human activities and some are exclusively human made (for example, industrial gases).

The major greenhouse gases the World emits as a result of human activity and that are included in and international emissions estimates are:
 Carbon dioxide (CO2) Methane (CH4)
 Nitrous oxide (N2O)
 Industrial Gases:
 Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs)
 Perfluorocarbons (PFCs)
 Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6)

Because carbon dioxide is the most abundant of these gasses, all the others are measured according to their potency in relation to CO² - hence the term CO²e (equivalent)
