MAPPING YOUR PATH
When talking about strategy, people normally assume it is the plans you make to reach a goal. This approach is only partly true, but is only one of the many parts of the strategy puzzle.

Strategy has 3 identifiable stages:
1: To determine your position in the current business environment where you operate – call it to determine your  GPS coordinates; to do this there are certain factors that you have to consider:

 Your external environment – these are the things over which you have little control but which could have a huge impact (think recession)

 Your internal environment – what are the factors within your organization / small business that can influence your outcomes?

 There are more, and each of them needs to be extracted and considered, both in isolation (to understand it’s make-up) and in
    relation to the other determinants (to understand what impact it could have on the whole)

2: To clearly and very precisely determine where you want to be; what is your destination and what do you want in the future? Consider however;

 This destination where you are going will also consist of an ever changing external environment and an internal environment pre-empt and plan for it.

 Visualizing this incorrectly and without remedies (throughout your process of getting  there) you would probably think you arrived at the wrong destination when and if you do!

3: This is where the planning comes in. To make allowances for changes and to
predict them according to the trends in the external environment and the probabilities of changes in your internal environment.
