THE GREEN TOMORROW
We all better get used to it; the economy (both local and International) are changing – and fundamentally so, because ever since the industrial revolution the momentum of development has increased exponentially, to the extent that we are now our own biggest enemies.

We can shout and scream, we can declare its natural cycles and that we are being bamboozled by scientists, but there is no way we can escape this new green culture. It’s not a passing phenomenon – it’s real and it’s here to stay.

Carbon footprints are measured in 3 categories:
Scope 1 emissions; are direct GHG emissions from sources that are owned or controlled by you or your company. Scope 1 can include emissions from fossil fuels burned on site, emissions from entity-owned or entity-leased vehicles, and other direct sources.

Scope 2 emissions; are indirect GHG emissions resulting from the generation of electricity, heating and cooling – basically your electricity bill.

Scope 3 emissions; include indirect GHG emissions from sources not owned or directly controlled by the entity but related to the entity’s activities. Although this is not a compulsory measurement this is where businesses spend most of their budgets - employee travel and commuting, solid waste disposal, and wastewater treatment.

Businesses will be well advised to include this last measurement into their footprint calculation – if not for reporting purposes, then simply for better internal controls and a healthier financial bottom line!

There is more to measuring a carbon footprint than merely using a standard internet calculator to sooth your corporate conscience.
